The Challenge: Turn blueprints into business opportunities

In this hackathon, we will explore how Ahlsell could turn a construction floor plan directly into an accurate, order-ready Bill of Materials. This capability could be used to give technical sales reps and estimators instant, defensible quotes — and feed downstream services like ERP order entry and room-by-room packing.

The capability layer

We will explore how to read a floor plan the way a specialist does: classifying complex multi-discipline document packages, detecting symbols and binding floating labels and dimensions to the right fixture, measuring continuous runs that are never explicitly dimensioned, and mapping generic requirements to specific, orderable catalog articles — including defensible "or equivalent" substitutions.

We will tackle sharp, concrete challenges that move the overall capability forward — such as document triage and room-spec reconciliation, symbol detection and floating-label association, unannotated measurement and scale calibration, and catalog mapping.

The app layer

Imagine what we could do with this enhanced capability! We want your creative thinking to help show what's possible — turning a raw floor plan into a quote a sales rep can trust and send in minutes, not days.

Some ideas to get you started:

• Web UI where customer can transform a blueprint to a bill of material (self-service)

• A tool a specialist can use to generate a bill of materials (expert user) 

• An interface where a specialist can audit and sign off a machine-generated take-off in seconds.

• Room-by-room, floor-by-floor breakdowns that can assist order scheduling and deliveries

• Show the submitted blueprints and instructions in a structured way with drilldown views that zooms in on selected parts of the blueprint. 

• A "why this material" view that shows the reasoning behind every substitution

• Display how Bill of Materials traces back to the original documentation

• Show customers all things they didn’t ask for but that we could offer based on the blueprint. 

How this will work

Some teams will work on the capability layer. Others will work on the app layer — both running in parallel.
